Exploring STEM Careers

At the 4th Annual STEM Discovery Day hosted by the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus, Dreams2Degrees (D2D) led an immersive STEM career exploration experience designed to expand students’ awareness of high-demand and high-impact fields.

Students rotated through interactive stations that combined technical skill-building with real-world problem solving. In the data science session, participants analyzed sample datasets and explored how data informs decision-making across industries. The environmental engineering station challenged students to design and test water filtration systems, introducing concepts in sustainability and resource management. In the construction module, students explored planning, budgeting, and structural design principles used in modern infrastructure projects.

Participants also engaged in a VEX robotics coding maze, where they programmed robots to navigate obstacles, reinforcing computational thinking and iterative problem-solving skills. The medical diagnosis simulation placed students in the role of healthcare professionals, guiding them through patient case analysis to understand how critical thinking and scientific knowledge intersect in medicine.

Through hands-on exploration and guided discussion, the workshop emphasized access, representation, and real-world application—helping students envision themselves pursuing future pathways in STEM. D2D is proud to partner with Virginia Tech to strengthen community engagement and broaden opportunities for the next generation of innovators.
